Starting my CLIL course in Malta

Good evening to all!

Yesterday I started the CLIL course in Malta. There are people from many countries and we are all primary and secondary teachers.

Firstly we introduced our selves to the class and afterwards we talked about our intention as CLIL teachers. In addition we made a reflection about our aims for the next two weeks.

During this week we are going to prepare a CLIL structure lesson working in groups. CLIL have got 5 components in order to prepare a lesson: content, cognition, communication, community and competence. 

Yesterday our work was focused on content through different activities such as “the diamond 9”. It is a diagram to make a ranking about a group of different ideas or concepts.

The last task was to create the working teams and begin to design a mind map for our lesson focusing in the first part, content. 

I have really enjoyed our classes today. We began with a word list to do our first task: Based on this list,  we had to predict what the text was about. Making predictions is a proper way to introduce a text because it attracts our students interest.

CLIL emphasises the development of Thinking Skills, and this was the way we began our class today, focused on cognition.We used Bloom’s Taxonomy to provide the structure for the cognition element of our CLIL lesson. 

Throughout different activities with the words given, we worked on different language skills such Pronunciation, Grammar and Vocabulary. After that, we continued with the text and its meaning.

Additionally, we have been provided with a worksheet that had different learning objectives, and we had to relate each one to one of the thought processes of Bloom’s Taxonomy. 

To finish the class we worked in groups investing some time in our lesson about Plants. We have developed our mind map with some contributions in the cognition part.

I am happy to be here and I expect to learn a lot during the course and improve my CLIL skills.

Ayer empecé el curso de CLIL en Malta. Hay gente de muchos países y todos/as somos profesores/as de Primaria y Secundaria.

Comenzamos el día presentándonos a los compañeros/as y después hablamos de nuestras intenciones como profesores/as CLIL. Además, hicimos una reflexión sobre nuestros objetivos para las dos próximas semanas.

Durante esta semana vamos a elaborar la estructura de un tema CLIL trabajando en equipos. CLIL tiene 5 componentes que incluiremos en este trabajo: Contenido, Cognición, Comunicación, Comunidad y Competencia.

Ayer enfocamos nuestro trabajo en "contenido" a través de diferentes actividades como "diamond 9". Éste es un diagrama que nos permite hacer un ranking partiendo de un grupo de ideas o conceptos.

 La última tarea de ayer consistió en crear los grupos de trabajo y comenzar el diseño de un mapa conceptual centrándonos en la primera parte: contenido. 

Hoy he disfrutado mucho de las clases. Empezamos con un listado de palabras para llevar a cabo la primera tarea: Basándonos en la lista, debíamos predecir el tema del texto. Hacer predicciones es una buena manera de introducir un texto porque de esta forma logramos que los alumnos/as muestren mayor interés.

CLIL hace énfasis en el desarrollo de las habilidades cognitivas, y esta fue la forma de comenzar la clase de hoy, cuyo tema principal era la cognición. Utilizamos la Taxonomía de Bloom para aportar la estructura al elemento "cognición" en el tema CLIL que estamos preparando.

A través de diferentes actividades con las palabras que nos dieron al comienzo de la clase, trabajamos diferentes habilidades lingüísticas como pronunciación, gramática y vocabulario. Después continuamos con el texto y su significado.

La siguiente actividad consistió en hacer una ficha en la aparecían varios objetivos de aprendizaje y nosotros/as teníamos que relacionar cada uno de ellos con uno de los diferentes procesos de la Taxonomía de Bloom.

Terminamos la clase de hoy trabajando en grupos dedicando algo de tiempo a nuestro tema sobre plantas. Hemos seguido con nuestro mapa conceptual completando esta vez la parte de cognición.

Estoy contenta de estar aquí y espero aprender mucho durante el curso mejorando mis habilidades con CLIL.
