THE CREATIVITY OF SILENCE

On the morning of Friday, 12th April, I had the opportunity to participate in a very interesting artistic experience at the School of Primary Education Raffaello Giovanogli. Guided by the teacher Monica, I was part of a creative process with a group of ten students of 4th grade.

To begin with, the teacher organized us sitting in a circle on the floor and we held a round of presentations in which each student, and I, said our name and what thing that we liked to do most in our free time.

Then, we spread some mats on the floor, we lay down, and began to relax our bodies in silence. Monica was leading the relaxation, first making us concentrate on the different parts of our body, and then with a story that started in a room with a window from where the sea could be seen. Little by little we went deeper into the story, imagining it, and opening the door to creativity. After the relaxation, the teacher gave all of us paper and materials for painting. We all chose the watercolors. We began to draw in complete silence the place where history had taken us.

It was amazing to see these students draw and paint. I let myself go, like them, by my own imagination and I tried to represent what my head had been building while Monica talked to us.

When we finished we shared the experience again sitting in a circle on the floor. Everyone who wanted told how he had felt, what he had imagined and what he had painted. It was very nice and very interesting to listen to their reflections and share mine, because although the language was not the same, they tried very hard to understand me.

Finally, we also voluntarily show our creations to the rest of the group.

The atmosphere in the classroom was all the time very positive and stimulating. I didn’t dare to take pictures, because I didn’t want to interfere in their state of relaxation and concentration.

I leave my work here as a sample, which the teacher offered me as a reminder of this enriching experience.

LA CREATIVIDAD DEL SILENCIO

La mañana del viernes 12 de abril  tuve la oportunidad de participar en una experiencia artística muy interesante en la Escuela de Educación Primaria Raffaello Giovanogli. Guiados por la profesora Monica, fui parte de un proceso creativo con un grupo de diez alumnos de 4º.

Para comenzar, la profesora nos organizó sentados en círculo en el suelo y realizamos una rueda de presentaciones en las que cada alumno, y yo, decíamos nuestro nombre y aquella cosa que más nos gustaba hacer en nuestro tiempo libre.

Luego, extendimos unas colchonetas en el suelo, nos tumbamos, y comenzamos a relajar nuestro cuerpo en silencio. Monica fue guiando la relajación, primero haciendo que nos concentráramos en las diferentes partes de nuestro cuerpo, y después con una historia que comenzaba en una habitación con una ventana desde la que se veía el mar. Poco a poco fuimos profundizando en la historia, imaginándola, y abriendo la puerta a la creatividad.

Tras la relajación, la profesora nos proporcionó a todos papel y materiales para pintar. Todos elegimos las acuarelas. Comenzamos a dibujar en completo silencio el lugar donde la historia nos había llevado.

Fue increíble ver dibujar y pintar a estos alumnos. Me deje llevar, al igual que ellos, por mi propia imaginación y traté de representar lo que mi cabeza había ido construyendo mientras Monica nos hablaba.

Cuando acabamos compartimos la experiencia nuevamente sentados en círculo en el suelo. Todo el que quiso contó cómo se había sentido, que se había imaginado y que había pintado. Fue muy bonito y muy interesante escuchar sus reflexiones y compartir las mías, pues aunque el idioma no era el mismo, se esforzaron muchísimo por entenderme.

Para terminar, también de manera voluntaria, mostramos nuestras creaciones al resto del grupo.

El clima en el aula fue en todo momento muy positivo y estimulante.

No me atreví a hacer fotos, pues no quise interferir en su estado de relajación y concentración. Dejo aquí como muestra mi trabajo, el cual la profesora me ofreció como recuerdo de esta experiencia tan enriquecedora.
